That was the weekend that was

An ugly weekend for our bets

Football: Chelsea feeling blue
It was another Super Sunday in the Premier League and one that saw the rare sight of Chelsea losing a game. The west Londoners went down 2-0 at Villa Park, the only ground that Jose Mourinho is yet to win at in his Premier League career, for their first defeat in 18 matches.

At the Emirates Stadium Arsenal again showed why it was foolish to write them off this season as they cruised to a 3-1 victory against a defensively poor Portsmouth. In the day's other game Blackburn showed they are a good bet for European football next season with a 1-0 victory over Sven-Goran Eriksson's Manchester City, who despite having a whirlwind start have now lost two on the trot.

Cricket: tough up north for England
England lost Andrew Flintoff to a reccurence of his ankle problem and surprisingly replaced him with bowler Jon Lewis and not all-rounder Dmitri Mascherenas. This cost them as the bowlers struggled with Lewis and Stuart Broad, the hero at Old Trafford, being especially expensive, in fact Broad went for the second worst one-day bowling figures for England (10-0-84-1). The game was interrupted by several rain breaks and the top order batsmen's failure to build partnerships gave England too much to do despite Paul Collingwood's 91 off 71 balls. They lost the game by 38 runs on the D/L method.

Golf: Warren walks off with play-off
Scotland got the home winner they craved at the Johnnie Walker Championships as Marc Warrn beat England's Simon Wakefield at Gleneagles. Both players finished at 12-under and despite a putt to win the championship on the first play-off hole, Wakefield had to settle for second as Warren reached the par-5 18th in two to birdie the second play-off hole and win the trophy.

Our bets

The good: we made a 2-point gain last week as Liverpool kept a clean sheet in their Champions League qualifier agaisnt Toulouse

The bad: It was always going to be a tough ask for Roy Keane's Sunderland to get anything out of the game at Old Trafford and sure enough they left empty-handed after a Louis Saha strike handed United the three points. We also were left with nothing to show for our efforts as we had predicted a 2-0 or 3-0 home win.

We missed out on any points gain at Gleneagles when our tips - David Lynn, Alastair Forsyth and Colin Montgomerie - all made the cut and top 20 finishes but did not make the first page of the leaderboard.

The ugly: Surely the twins to win BB8 was akin to printing money? Ah no we hadn't prepared for the enormous public backing that thick Essex boy Brian would attract and as a result we were left crying into our ready made meals on Friday night as Davina announced the results...

The week ahead
Football: It's internationals week as England play Israel at Wembley in a must-win game. Steve McClaren is so desperate for a victory he has even recalled Emile Heskey...

Golf: Focus shifts to the wonderful scenery of Crans-sure-Sierre in Switzerland for the European Masters

Grand Prix: Battle resumes on the circuit as Ferrari look for home victory at Monza

Cricket: The seven match one-day series between England and India is delicately poised at 3-2 - action shifts back to London this week for the final two games
