On the eve of the thirtieth anniversary of Elvis Presley's disappearance bookmakers William Hill continue to accept bets that he is still alive. Over the years the king of Rock n' Roll has been spotted in cities across the world and at one point he was rumoured to be living on the moon.
The conspiracy theorists fail to believe that the singer famous for hits Blue Suede Shoes and Hound Dog, died on his toilet at his home Gracelands. At the time of his death it was reported that he had ballooned to twenty stones in weight and had developed a taste for triple layered burgers with bacon and cheese.
Hills currently offer 200/1 that the FBI will confirm through DNA tests that Elvis is alive and as it is the season of hoaxes. However the belief that Presley is still with us is not the only topic that the bookies continue to take bets on.
Hills will couple the bet with the foreign office arresting Lord Lucan – who was again said to have been found recently living in a Land Rover in New Zealand. The authorities investigated and while the Lord-Lucan lookalike did indeed have a posh accent he was found to be five inches smaller than the Lord who went missing in the late 1960s after the murder of his children's nanny.
Also among favourite bets is that the Natural History Museum will confirm the current existence of the Loch Ness monster – despite many years of trying to locate Nessie she still remains a figment of tourists' imaginations and the serving PM, Gordon Brown to confirm the current existence of intelligent extraterrestrial life – and that does not include members of his own cabinet….
"Elvis in hiding is one of the most enduring conspiracy theories of modern times but we are seeing less and less bets on his emergence and within a couple of years even that will probably peter out," said Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams.
William Hill Bet: 200/1 Any of the following to happen in the next year: Elvis to be proved alive, Lord Lucan found, Loch Ness Monster found or proof of the existence of intelligent extraterrestrial life
